Oakland's Jack London Square finally shows promise as bars, restaurants and people flock to the waterfront

For love of Oakland. That is why new restaurant owner Steve Sparkes dropped anchor in Jack London Square.
One of Oakland's oldest neighborhoods, at Broadway and the Embarcadero, Jack London Square is undergoing change, becoming one of the city's places to see and be seen
"I think so much of Oakland as a gem" waiting to be discovered, said Sparkes, a volunteer soccer coach opening his Steel Rail Public House in a long-vacant Water Street building.
New businesses, restaurants and other ventures are all stepping into the area, which is steeped in waterfront history.
