Oakland Museum: New Orleans, Prospect.3 and the Art of the Gulf Coast

Enjoy a glimpse at the rare and authentic “soul” of New Orleans on this travel program with the OMCA Art Guild. With an itinerary crafted by our host, an accomplished artist, that provides otherwise inaccessible entrée to the culture of New Orleans, we’ll enjoy as visits with prominent artists and collectors, and also experience Prospect.3, Notes for Now, the International Contemporary Art Biennial recently named among the Top 20 BiennialsDedicated space in 18 museums and sites throughout the city will showcase the work of 58 artists from 25 countries selected to interpret the richness of this unique culture. The trip also coincides with the start of Carnival, and includes visits with locals who craft the floats and costumes for Mardi Gras parades and hearing about the traditions and rituals of the season.

Highlights include: a Moveable Feast at three private mansions in the French Quarter; New Orleans’ above ground cemeteries; a visit to witness the “renaissance” of the Lower 9th Ward, ground zero of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina ten years ago; the art of the Gulf Coast at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi; The Walter Anderson Museum In Ocean Springs; a tour of the grounds and an elegant luncheon at the Evergreen Plantation, named to the National Register of Historic Places; and much more!
